Top 10 for Transfers

  1. Schedule a "New Transfer Student Appointment" with an Academic Advisor. Discuss your schedule for next quarter, planning for graduation, and ask any questions you have about academic life at Cal Poly.
  2. Meet with your faculty advisor. Discuss concentrations or technical electives, career goals, graduate school, research, and your department. Check out the "Majors" tab above for a link to your department's website if you're unsure of your assigned faculty advisor.
  3. Attend a career fair. Career fairs are offered every quarter and are a great place to network and find a job or internship - it's never to early to apply for summer! Career Services also hosts workshops to help you prepare.
  4. Meet with an Engineering Career Counselor. Have your resume or cover letter reviewed and discuss topics like interview skills, networking, handling job offers, job searches/applications, and considering changing your major, among other topics.
  5. Learn about studying abroad. All students must complete the Study Abroad 101 Workshop/Module before they can meet with a study abroad advisor. Explore your options through the International Exchange Program, specifically designed for Cal Poly Engineers, or your worldwide options through the Cal Poly International Center.
  6. Join a campus organization or club. Organizations and clubs range from major- or field-related, special interest, greek life, to sports! You can also find a range of organizations through Student Diversity and Belonging. Meet other people and develop your skills.
  7. Attend National Engineers Week (E-Week) in winter quarter organized by Engineering Student Council. Dates and agenda TBA.
  8. Find your community at Cal Poly. Find your people through the Transfer Center's lists of Spaces to Get Involved (scroll to the bottom of the linked page) or through Student Diversity and Belonging
  9. Check out the Transfer Center's services. Attend instagram live and in-person events, chat with a Transfer Academic Coach, and more.
  10. Have a meaningful summer. Participate in a summer internship (see links above for career-related resources); take a course to increase your degree progress (schedule an appointment with an academic advisor if you want to talk about your options); take part in a research opportunity, such as the Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP); or research employers, salaries and hiring trends for your major through Career Services.
