Students requesting to double major must review and complete the steps below. Not all majors are approved for a double major.
Please Note
The College of Engineering does not encourage or recommend double majors. It is extremely rare that a double major request will be approved. Eligible students are encouraged to pursue a master's program (upon completion of their undergraduate coursework) or a 4 + 1 program.
Step # 1: Review the Majors that will Not be Approved
Students should read through this list in detail before moving forward.

Step # 2: Prepare Materials to Request the Double Major
Students requesting to double major must provide the following:
- A letter outlining why they want to pursue a double major rather than a BMS or MS degree.
- An academic plan indicating how they will graduate in a timely manner (no more than 15 quarters if they entered Cal Poly as a freshman or 9 quarters if they entered Cal Poly as an upper-division transfer student).
In addition, students requesting double majors must have very high grade point averages (GPA's) and be willing to carry very high quarterly unit loads.
Step # 3: Submit Requests
Requests should be emailed to eadvise@calpoly.edu for review by the Associate Dean. Requests should include the following:
- Name
- EMPL ID
- Major
- Cal Poly Email Address
- Cell/Local Phone Number
- Letter (see Step #2)
- Quarter by Quarter Graduation Plan (see Step #2)
Students will be notified by email of the outcome of their request.
