Changing Majors within CENG

Change of major is not a guarantee and current requirements are subject to change at anytime.

Students switching within the College of Engineering do not need to submit an inquiry through their portal.

Minimum Standards

  • Students must complete at least one quarter at Cal Poly before changing their major.
  • Students must have completed less than 90 Cal Poly units or prove they can graduate in 5 years or less with a quarter-by-quarter graduation plan.
    • Transfer students must be able to prove they can graduate in 3 years and a quarter or less with a quarter-by-quarter graduation plan.

Process

Step 1: Research

Students are expected to research their options and make a well-informed decision before pursuing a change of major. This includes becoming familiar with your intended major’s flowchart and determining your time to degree if you switch to the new major.

  • Engineering Change of Major Workshop: Attend this workshop to learn about all 13 of the College of Engineering majors, possible career paths, suggested research activities and the engineering change of major policy. See http://eadvise.calpoly.edu/events/ for workshop dates and times. Although not required, this workshop is highly recommended and it is expected that freshman attend this workshop.
  • Complete the research necessary ensure your decision.
    • Please refer to the Change of Major Application for suggested research activities.
    • If switching out of CSC, SE, or CPE only: You are required to meet with your current department chair to do an exit interview before changing majors.

 Step 2: Meet the GPA Requirements

  • CSC and SE will NOT be accepting change of majors for the foreseeable future, except for the following exceptions:
    • Students originally admitted to CPE or GENE and switching from CPE or GENE to CSC or SE must have a 2.5Cal Poly Cumulative GPA and student must be in good academic standing.
    • Students  in SE that want to switch to CSC (or vice versa) must have a 2.0 Cal Poly cumulative GPA and be in good academic standing
  • Students wanting to switch to the following majors from within the College of Engineering (CENG) must have a 2.0 Cal Poly cumulative GPA and be in good academic standing:
    • Biomedical Engineering (BMED)
    • Computer Engineering (CPE)
    • Electrical Engineering (EE)
    • General Engineering (GENE)
    • Manufacturing Engineering (MFGE)
    • Materials Engineering (MATE)
  • Students wanting to switch to the following majors from within the College of Engineering (CENG) must have a 2.5 Cal Poly cumulative GPA and be in good academic standing:
    • Civil Engineering (CE)
    • Environmental Engineering (ENVE)
  • Students wanting to switch to the following majors from within the College of Engineering (CENG) must have a 2.6 Cal Poly cumulative GPA and be in good academic standing:
    • Industrial Engineering (IE)
  • Students wanting to switch to the following majors from within the College of Engineering (CENG) must have a 2.75 Cal Poly cumulative GPA and be in good academic standing:
    • Aerospace Engineering (AERO)
    • Mechanical Engineering (ME)
      • *If a student was originally admitted to GENE and is switching from GENE to ME, Cal Poly Cumulative GPA must be a 2.0 and student must be in good academic standing.

Step 3: Submit Change of Major Application

  • Students that meet the criteria listed above can apply to change majors.  To do so please submit your completed Change of Major Application. You should receive an email within a week asking you to agree to the change.
    • Students with over 90 Cal Poly units completed and Transfer students are required to turn in their quarter-by-quarter graduation plan along with their Change of Major Application.
    • Please note: Submitting a complete Change of Major Applicationwill result in the change of major being initiated if requirements are met, so students need to be sure of their decision before doing so.
    • Applications will close each quarter at the end of the 10th week of instruction and reopen once that quarter's Cal Poly GPA posts.
