Former Returning Students Not In Good Standing

Students considered not in good standing include those who were formally disqualified from the university, those who left with one or more grade point averages below a 2.0 their last quarter at Cal Poly, and/or they have one or more registration holds due to academic or administrative probation. Students who are formally disqualified must meet the readmission criteria prior to returning to College of Engineering. Students who break their enrollment when they are not in good standing must also meet the readmission criteria that formally disqualified students must meet prior to returning to the College of Engineering.

The readmission criteria is based upon how many lower-division units a students has left to complete and available to them at a community college.  Readmission is also possible for students with only upper-division units remaining (see Category 3 below).  Students must create a Readmission Agreement with the College of Engineering indicating the courses they plan to take at a community college to meet the readmission criteria (listed below).  Students that meet the requirements are guaranteed readmission to their former major. Please follow the steps below:

Step #1: Review the “Road to Readmission” Presentation

Students should read through this presentation in detail before moving forward.  This will provide guidance and clarity on the readmission process and will help idenitfy your cateogry.  Click HERE to start the presentation.

Step #2: Identify Your Category

Category 1

Students with 22 or more semester units (33 quarter units) of major/support coursework outstanding at a community college:

  • Students must complete all lower division major /support coursework that the community college offersThe total must be at least 22 semester units (33 quarter units). However, in many cases it will most likely be higher than 22 units since all lower division major/support coursework must be completed prior to returning to Cal Poly.
  • A minimum of a 2.750 grade point average is required in the readmission coursework.
  • "D" or "F" grades are not typically permitted.
  • Students may need to attend more than one community college in order to meet the minimum requirements.
  • Community colleges may require prerequisites before enrolling in readmit courses.  If the prerequisite is a required major or support course and a C- was received in the course at Cal Poly, then that community college course will also be included into the readmission GPA.
  • Withdrawals (W's) are acceptable.
  • If one of the courses listed in the approved agreement is no longer offered at the community college, please contact eadvise@calpoly.edu for a possible revision to the agreement.
  • The College of Engineering will not honor Academic Renewals from other schools.
  • Students are required to be away from Cal Poly for a minimum of one calendar year.
  • Students are advised to assess whether they should return to school immediately or take some time off before enrolling in readmit coursework.
  • Must be in good academic standing at the last institution attended.
  • No exceptions will be made regarding the above criteria.

Category 2

Students with between 12-21 semester units (18-32 quarter units) of major/support coursework outstanding at a community college:

  • The Road to the Readmission presentation will help determine whether Category 2 is the correct category.  Students under Category 2 must complete their outstanding lower-division major/support coursework prior to returning to Cal Poly.  This coursework must total between 12-21 semester units (18-32 quarter units).
  • All students who are eligible for Category 1, must abide by Category 1 requirements.
  • A minimum of a 3.000 grade point average is required in the readmission coursework.
  • "D" or "F" grades are not typically permitted.
  • Students may need to attend more than one community college in order to meet minimum requirements.

  • Must be in good academic standing at the last institution attended.
  • No exceptions will be made regarding the above criteria.

Category 3

Students with less than 12 semester units (18 quarter units) available to be taken at a community college are advised to explore their options with Dawn Sirois (dsirois@calpoly.edu) or Ashlee Burt (amburt@calpoly.edu) in Engineering Student Services.  Depending on the student’s academic history, it may be necessary to apply and graduate from another university.  Note:  Students eligible for Category 1 or 2 must abide by those requirements.

Step 3: Submit a Readmission Agreement

The readmission agreement can be created HERE.   After the agreement is submitted it will be reviewed by an advisor and the advisor will contact the student with the next steps.
