Academic Expectations

College of Engineering students are required to meet these minimum academic expectations in order to remain in satisfactory academic/administrative standing:

  • Maintain 2.0 grade point averages for current term, Cal Poly cumulative, and overall/higher ed.
  • Maintain a 2.0 major grade point average. Major courses are outlined on your curriculum sheet under the major column.
  • Enroll and complete (with passing grades) a minimum of 6 units of degree applicable major and/or support coursework each quarter with no more than 4 units that are not degree applicable. Degree applicable units are those units required for your major as outlined on your curriculum sheet. Students unable to initially register in 6 units of major/support coursework should meet with an academic advisor in the Advising Center to discuss what other courses they may be eligible to take that will meet this requirement.
  • Complete a minimum of 12 degree applicable units per quarter (with the requisite number of major/support units).
  • Complete your lower-division math and science courses as early as possible. Engineering students are expected to be enrolled in a math course each quarter until the sequence is completed.
  • Complete with passing grades a minimum of 36 units that are degree applicable each academic year (an academic year runs from summer through spring). Students are encouraged to average 15 or more units per quarter in order to graduate in a timely manner. It is also a good idea to build up a unit buffer so if a unforeseen circumstance arises, students will always meet the minimum requirements. Students on an official coop, semester at sea, or studying abroad can request a waiver from this requirement by e-mailing the Assistant Dean. Note: readmit students must meet the progress conditions outlined in their readmission contracts to ensure a timely graduation and contract students must meet the progress conditions outlined in their contracts to ensure a timely graduation.
  • Completion of degree within 13 quarters for students entering Cal Poly as freshmen or within 8 quarters for student entering Cal Poly as transfer students.

Students who do not meet these expectations will be subject to academic/administrative probation and registration holds. Students who do not meet their contracts will be dismissed from Cal Poly.

Addresses
Students are required to use and check their Cal Poly e-mail account often since e-mail is an official means of communication. They are also required to keep their portal addresses current.

Summer Quarter
Summer quarter is a regular quarter, but due to lower student demand fewer courses are offered (approximately 20% of our students attend summer quarter). Students who are in good academic/administrative standing (those students meeting the academic expectations mentioned above) may request a minimum progress waiver form once their spring grades have been posted if they are planning to attend summer quarter at Cal Poly and they want to be waived from meeting minimum progress requirements.

Students on contract (students not in good standing) must meet the minimum progress requirements stated above if they enroll for summer quarter at Cal Poly (students will questions can see Kim or Dawn in the Advising Center). Students appealing a dismissal letter can appeal to attend summer quarter if they are able to register for a minimum of 12 degree applicable units with a minimum of six units of major/support coursework. Otherwise, these students should appeal to attend fall quarter. It should be noted that appeals for summer quarter are treated the same as those received for fall, winter, and spring quarters.

Minimum Progress Waiver Form
Students wishing to take more than 4 units per quarter that are not degree applicable can request to do so via a Minimum Progress Waiver form available in the College of Engineering Advising Center (40-115). These students are expected to be enrolled in a minimum of 12 degree applicable units (6 must be major/support) and be on track to complete 36 degree applicable units for the current academic year (a written academic year plan must be attached to the Minimum Progress Waiver form). Students unable to enroll in 6 units of major/support coursework need to demonstrate that they attempted to enroll in all major/support coursework they are eligible to take based on prerequisites, and show that they did enroll on time based on their registration date. These waivers will be considered after reviewing the student's registration audit trail and open courses at the time of initial registration and ending registration. Students under academic/administrative contracts (this includes students trying to change their major) are not eligible for Minimum Progress Waivers. Students in satisfactory academic/administrative standing can request a Minimum Progress Waiver for summer quarter. Minimum Progress Waiver forms are due no later than the last day to add/drop of the quarter in question.

Multiple Enrollments
An enrollment is defined as a course registration past the add/drop period. Students in the College of Engineering are expected to enroll in each course only once. In some cases, we acknowledge that some students will fail a course or receive a grade that is lower than the required prerequisite for a sequential course and need to retake it. However, students who repeat multiple courses, withdraw from multiple courses, or fail to pass an individual course twice are subject to academic/administrative probation. Students who fail to meet their contract requirements will be dismissed from Cal Poly.

Grade Changes
Students in the College of Engineering should not assume that grade changes made after the initial grades are posted will remove them from academic/administrative probation. When grade changes occur, students should send an e-mail to eadvise@calpoly notifying the Advising Center of the grade change (your e-mail will be forwarded to the appropriate advisor), why the grade change was made, why the grade change was done, and what type of academic/administrative probation letter they are currently under for the quarter. Dismissed students should not wait for a possible grade change, but should follow the appeal information outlined in the dismissal letter.

Repeat Credit and the Unofficial Transcripts

Academic/administrative probation letters are sent based on the grades posted at the end of each quarter. Although repeat credit may appear to remove some students from academic/administrative probation due to grade point average recalculation, this is not the case. Rather than looking at the adjusted grade point averages, it is the unadjusted grade point average that is used for academic/administrative probation purposes.

Change of Major
Students in the College of Engineering wishing to change their major outside of the College of Engineering and who wish to take more than 4 units outside of their declared degree, will be placed on academic/administrative probation (this contract also serves as a change of major contract). Students are encouraged to meet with an academic advisor in the College of Engineering Advising Center if they have questions.

Dismissal Letters

Dismissal letters are mailed at the end of each quarter once grades have been posted and files have been reviewed. There is also an e-mail sent at the time the registration hold is placed. Dismissals occur when students do not meet our published academic expectations.
