UNDER CONSTRUCTION
College of Engineering undergraduate students are required to meet the following academic expectations in order to remain in good standing:
Students must maintain a 2.0 grade point average (or higher) at all times in these four areas:
- Term
- CPSLO
- Higher Ed
- Major
Students are expected to be enrolled in six (or more) major and/or support units each quarter.
Students are expected to contact their department office to verify when major courses will be offered each academic year and map out a graduation plan based on the departmental course offering.
Students are expected to take a math course each quarter until their math sequence has been completed. Likewise, they should also complete their physics sequence as early as possible.
Students are expected to graduate very close to the unit value required for their degree.
Expected Academic Progress (EAP) for Students who Entered Cal Poly as Freshmen
1st yr: completion of at least 20% of the total number of units required for the degree.
2nd yr: completion of at least 45% of the total number of units required for the degree.
3rd yr: completion of 75% of the total number of units required for the degree.
4th yr: completion of 100% of the total number of units required for the degree.
Expected Academic Progress (EAP) for Students who Entered Cal Poly as Transfer Students
1st yr: completion of at least 55% of the total number of units required for the degree.
2nd yr: completion of at least 80% of the total number of units required for the degree.
3rd yr: completion of at least 100% of the total number of units required for the degree.
Students can take non-degree applicable coursework if they can show they will graduate very close to the unit value required for their degree. Students are expected to limit their non-degree applicable units to 4 units per quarter at most. Students wishing to pursue minors must submit a graduation plan for approval to the Advising Center staff for review. Students in good standing who elect to take minor courses or other non-degree applicable courses are expected to carry high unit loads each quarter.
Students under academic/administrative-academic probation should refer to their letters for their specific requirements.
Students who do not meet these expectations are subject to academic/administrative-academic disqualification. Students on probation can be disqualified after one or two quarters. Students in good standing who have exceeded their graduation unit requirement will be placed under "agreements" to ensure a timely graduation.
Addresses
Students are required to use and check their Cal Poly e-mail account often since e-mail is an official means of communication. They are also required to keep their portal addresses current.
Summer Quarter
Students under contract should carefully consider their options before attending summer quarter. Since most contract require a minimum of 12 degree applicable units with a minimum of six units of major/support coursework, summer quarter might not be a viable option for some students under contract.
Students appealing a disqualification letter can appeal to attend summer quarter if they are able to register for a minimum of 12 degree applicable units with a minimum of six units of major/support coursework. Otherwise, these students should appeal to attend fall quarter. It should be noted that appeals for summer quarter are treated the same as those received for fall, winter, and spring quarters.
Minimum Progress Waiver Form
Students unable to enroll in 6 units of major/support coursework need to demonstrate they attempted to enroll in all major/support coursework they are eligible to take based on prerequisites, and show that they did enroll on time based on their registration date. These waivers will be considered after reviewing the student's registration audit trail and open courses at the time of initial registration and ending registration. Students under contract are not eligible for a Minimum Progress Waiver. Students in good standing can request a Minimum Progress Waiver for summer quarter. Minimum Progress Waiver forms are due no later than the last day to add/drop of the quarter in question.
Multiple Enrollments
An enrollment is defined as a course registration past the add/drop period. Students in the College of Engineering
are expected to enroll in each course only once. In some cases, we acknowledge that some
students will fail a course or receive a grade that is lower than the required prerequisite for a sequential course and need to retake it. However, students who
repeat multiple courses, withdraw from multiple courses, or fail to pass an individual course twice are
subject to academic/administrative probation. Students who fail to meet
their contract requirements will be dismissed from Cal Poly.
Grade Changes
Students in the College of Engineering should not assume that grade
changes made after the initial grades are posted will remove them from
academic/administrative probation. When grade changes occur, students should send an e-mail to eadvise@calpoly notifying the Advising Center of the grade change (your e-mail will be forwarded to the appropriate advisor), why the
grade change was made, when the grade change was done, and what type of academic/administrative probation
letter they are currently under for the quarter. Disqualified students should not wait for a possible grade change, but should follow the appeal information outlined in the dismissal letter.
Change of Major
Students are encouraged to meet with an academic advisor in the College of Engineering Advising Center if they are interested in changing their major. Students who receive an administrative probation contract do have the option to take courses outside of their major as long as they realize they need to change their major outside of the College of Engineering by the end of the contract quarter.
Disqualification Letters
Students are officially notified of their disqualification via e-mail and a registration hold is placed at that time. Disqualifications occur when students do not meet our published academic expectations. Due to the short amount of time between some quarters, students should check their e-mail daily. If they know they did not meet their contract, but did not receive an e-mail they should come to the Advising Center and ask to speak to Kim or Dawn on the first day of the quarter following the quarter they were under the contract in question.
