Electrical Engineering Catalog Changes
These changes apply to EE majors only.
  • Note from Dr. MacCarley (December 2008): The EE faculty voted today to allow the Chair to substitute Chem 127 for Chem 124 in student hardship cases, in which adherence to the curriculum flow chart would be impeded due to the student's inability to enroll in Chem 124.

  • EE does not allow RP's in EE 464 except in extreme illness situations.
  • Chair approval is required to sign up for independent study (200, 400, 470, 471, 500, 570) before permit number is issued. Supervisory course form must be signed by the faculty supervisor and be accompanied by an Independent Study Proposal including educational objectives and deliverables as applicable. Credit will not be given for prior employment.
  • Students following catalogs prior to 2007-09 should select their engineering support electives from the list posted on the EE website. Students who have completed courses approved on the previous list will receive credit if the courses were completed prior to the end of Winter 2008.
  • Students who were originally accepted to Cal Poly as upper-division transfer students under the 2007-09 catalog may receive credit for EE 111 (1) by taking one additional technical elective unit or one additional engineering support elective and credit for EE 151 (1) by taking one additional technical elective unit or one additional engineering support elective. Petitions are not required.
  • Students following the 2007-09 catalog may select IME 458 (4) in addition to these two choices: IME 156 (2) or IME 157 (4).
  • EE 442 (1) will become EE 375 (1) beginning Fall 2007. Students who have credit for EE 442 who plan to move to the 2007-09 catalog will receive automatic credit for EE 375 (1). Students planning to graduate on a pre-2007 catalog who need EE 442 should take EE 375. Petitions are not required, this is an automatic process.
  • Students following the 2003-05 through 2005-07 catalogs may substitute EE 460 (2) for EE 460 (1) with the excess unit counting towards an engineering support elective or technical elective. The unit needs to be listed on the technical elective form in order for it to count as a technical elective. The unit cannot count for both the engineering support elective and for a technical elective.
  • Transfer students following the 2003-05 through 2009-11 catalogs may substitute 3 1/2 excess units from a CHEM 124 equivalent course + 1/2 excess unit from a PHYS 131 or 141 or 132 or 133 equivalent course for CHEM 125 (4). A petition is not required.
  • Students following the 2005-07 catalog (or earlier catalogs) should take PHYS 141 rather than PHYS 131. This is an automatic substitution.
  • Students following the 2000-01 through 2001-03 catalogs may substitute CPE X133 (4) for EE/CPE 219 (3) + EE/CPE 259 (1). A petition is not required.
  • Students following the 2003-05 through 2005-07 catalogs may substitute CPE X133 (4) for EE/CPE 129 (3) + EE/CPE 169 (1). A petition is not required.
  • This is limited to students who have non-Cal Poly transfer credit for equivalent courses to EE 112 and/or 211 OR for continuing student originally following pre-2003 catalogs who had already completed one or more circuits courses when they moved catalogs. Students following the 2003-05 through 2005-07 catalogs may use EE 110 (1) or an excess transfer unit from work that is equivalent to EE 112, 211, 241, ME 211, 212, MATE 210, MATH 141, 142, 143, 241, 244, PHYS 131, 132, 133, CSC 101 or an excess technical elective unit for EE 111 (1). Students following the 2003-05 through 2005-07 catalogs may use an excess transfer unit from work that is equivalent to EE 110, 112, 211, 241, ME 211, 212, MATE 210, MATH 141, 142, 143, 241, 244, PHYS 131, 132, 133, CSC 101 or an excess technical elective unit for EE 151 (1). Both of these substitutions are limited to students outlined above. A petition is not required.
  • Note: STAT 321 cannot be substituted for STAT 350. These courses are not deemed equivalent because of the coverage of random processes, power spectral density, noise propagation through systems, and the PSD - autocorrelation relationship. These topics are important for the noise analysis of communication systems, for example.
  • Students following the 2001-03 catalog may substitute CPE 329 (4) for CPE 336 (4) or CPE 229 (3) + CPE 269 (1) for CPE 319 (3) + CPE 359 (1). A petition is not required.
  • Students following the 1992-1994 to 2000-2001 catalogs may substitute CPE 336 (4) for CPE 319 (3) and CPE 359 (1). A petition is not required. Double-counting is not allowed, so the same course cannot satisfy a major course requirement and a technical elective requirement.
  • Students following the 1992-1994 to 2001-2003 catalogs may substitute IME 156 (2) + technical elective (1) for IME 157 (3). A petition is not required. Note: This substitution cannot be used as part of a group substitution such as the 14 unit grouping mentioned further down the page.
  • Students following the 1992-1994 to 2001-2003 catalogs may substitute EE 228 (1) + STAT 350 (1) + 2 units of additional technical elective credit for Math 317 (4). A petition is not required.
  • Students following the 2003-2005 catalog may use EE 334 (3) + EE 401 (3) + EE 313 (3) + EE 353 (1) = 10 units (the excess unit is a free elective) for EE 335 (4) + EE 402 (4) + EE 442 (1) = 9 units. This is a group substitution and only applies to students who have all 10 units completed. A course petition is not required.
  • Students following the 2003-2005 catalog may substitute IME 157 (3) for IME 156 (2). The excess unit is a free elective.  A course petition is not required.
  • Students following the 2003-2005 catalog may substitute EE 112 (2) + EE 211 (3) + EE 241 (1) + EE 212 (3) + EE 242 (1) = 10 units for EE 213 (4) + EE 253 (1) + EE 214 (4) + EE 254 (1) = 10 units. A petition is not required. Note: check the EE annual course offering for the phasing out schedule of EE 112/211/241/212/242. Partial credit is not possible--all ten units must be completed in order to receive credit.
  • Students following the 1992-1994 to 2001-2003 catalogs may substitute EE 129 (3) for EE 219 (3). A petition is not required.
