Computer Engineering Catalog Changes

These catalog changes apply to CPE majors only.

  • Transfer students following the 2005-07 through 2009-11 catalogs may substitute 3 1/2 excess units from a CHEM 124 equivalent course + 1/2 excess unit from a PHYS 131 or 141 or 132 or 133 equivalent course for CHEM 125 (4). A petition is not required.
  • Students following the 2005-07 catalog (or earlier catalogs) should take PHYS 141 rather than PHYS 131. This is an automatic substitution.
  • For informational purposes concerning a senior project option:
  1. The CPE Director will send out an advertisement to the CPE students that lists ME Senior Design projects that CPE students may join. (The advertisement is written by the ME faculty member teaching the Senior Design course or the project sponsor.)
  2. Interested CPE students can contact the faculty members listed in the advertisement or attend the initial project presentations during the first meeting of ME 428.
  3. Based on the approval of the ME 428 faculty member and the student's interest in the project, the CPE student will be invited to join the project team and be given a permission to sign up for ME 428 (3) + ME 481 (2).
  4. The CPE student would then file a Petition for Course Substitution to substitute ME 428 (3) + ME 481 (2) for CPE 461 (3) + CPE 462 (2).
  • Students following the 2000-01 through 2001-03 catalogs may substitute CPE X133 (4) for CPE/EE 219 (3) + CPE/EE 259 (1). A petition is not required.
  • Students following the 2003-05 through 2005-07 catalogs may substitute CPE X133 (4) for CPE/EE 129 (3) + CPE/EE 169 (1). A petition is not required.
  • Students following the 2003-05 through 2005-07 catalogs may substitute CPE X327 (3) and CPE X347 for CPE 229 (3) and CPE 269. A petition is not required.
  • Students following the 2003-05 through 2005-07 catalogs may substitute CPE X330 (4) for EE 228 (4). A petition is not required.
  • Students may request to substitute CPE 316 (4) with a CPE approved technical elective (4) during Winter Quarter 2006 through Fall Quarter 2011. A course substitution petition is required to substitute another course for CPE 316 for all students using catalogs up through 2007-09.  Do not include the course you are substituting for CPE 316 on your technical elective form. Note: petitions are not approved until all signatures have been obtained so please do not delay processing the petition.
  • Students following the 2003-2005 to 2005-2007 catalogs may substitute 2 units from IME 458 (the other two units can be used towards technical elective credit via a technical elective form) for IME 156 (2). A petition is not required.
  • CPE 357 (4) is the replacement course for CPE 250 (4) (was CPE X317 (4)) for pre-2005 catalogs.
  • Catalog Change for CPE 400: Total credit limited to 4 units, with a maximum of 2 units per quarter was changed to Total credit limited to 4 units. This change allows students to register for all 4 units in one quarter.
  • CPE 250 will be offered as CPE X317 (now CPE 357) for the 2003-04 and 2004-05 academic years. These are equivalent courses and no petitions are required.
  • Students following the 1998-1999 to 2001-2003 catalogs and who have not completed Math 317 (4) + STAT 321 (4) prior to Fall 2003 may substitute CPE X317 (4) (now CPE 357) + STAT 350 (4). These are not equivalent courses, but will align the students more closely to the 2003 requirements.
  • Students following the 1998-1999 to 2001-2003 catalogs may request to substitute CPE X 317/357 (4) for CPE 215 (4) if they have not used CPE X317/357 (4) for any other substitutions (such as the substitution mentioned above or for technical elective credit). A petition is required.
  • Students following the 1998-1999 to 2001-2003 catalogs may substitute Math X318 (will be Math 344 beginning with Winter 2004) for Math 317. A petition is required and will not be approved until STAT 321 is completed.
  • Students following the 1998-1999 to 2001-2003 catalogs may substitute CPE 329 (4) for CPE 336 (4). A petition is not required.
  • Students following the 1998-1999 to 2001-2003 catalogs should be aware that CPE X317 (4) is now CPE/CSC 250 (4) (note: CPE 250 was renumbered to CPE 357).
  • Students following the 2003-2005 catalog may substitute CPE X317/357 (4) for CPE/CSC 250 (4). A petition is not required.
  • Prerequisite changes - The prerequisites for CSC 453 in the 2003-05 catalog are CSC 315 and CSC X317/250 or CSC 353. Students who take CPE X317 will receive automatic credit for CSC 250. Students who are planning to graduate under pre-2003 catalogs and have not taken CPE X317, should plan on taking it prior to CSC 453. CSC 250 or CPE X317 (but not both) will count as a technical elective under the pre-2003 catalogs. Warning: replacing a lower-division course for an upper-division course may mean you will need to take an additional upper-division course to meet the 60 units of upper-division coursework (university requirement)--see the top of your curriculum sheet. Note: CPE 250 was renumbered to CPE 357.
  • Prerequisite changes - The prerequisites for CSC X317 (same as 250/357) in the 2003-05 catalog are CSC 103 or CSC 109 and CPE 229/X327. Students planning to graduate on pre-2003 catalogs may satisfy the CPE 229/X327 prerequisite with CPE 215. Students planning to graduate under the 2003-05 catalog must take CPE 229/X327 (CPE 215 transfers to the 2003-05 catalog as free elective credit only).

CPE X327 + X347 has the identical content as CPE 229 + CPE 269, but these X courses will count towards the 60 units of upper-division coursework required for graduation. A petition is not required.
  • Students following the 2003-2005 catalog may substitute EE 301 (3) + Math 317 (1) for EE 228 (4). The three excess units from Math 317 apply towards free elective credit only---not technical elective credit. A petition is not required.
