Aerospace Engineering Catalog Changes
These catalog changes apply to AERO majors only.
  • Sophomore students who were not successful in registering in PHYS 131 during their first year at Cal Poly (Fall 2007, Winter 2008, Spring 2008) or Fall 2008, may submit a petition to substitute PHYS 141 for PHYS 131 for Fall 2008. The petition must be submitted at the time of enrollment in PHYS 141.
  • Students following the 2001-03 through 2009-11 catalogs can substitute STAT 542 (4) for STAT 312 (4) and receive GE B6 credit. A petition is not required.
  • Students following pre-2005 catalogs may substitute CE 207 (3) for CE 205 (2) + CE 206 (1). A petition is not required.
  • Note to students who are changing catalogs: Unit shortages (lower-division and upper-division) in the major column need to be covered by completing additional concentration electives. Upper-division unit overages can be petitioned to be counted towards concentration electives with the proper approvals.
  • CE 207 (3) is the replacement course for CE 205 (2) for pre-2005 catalogs.
  • Students following the 1998-1999 through the 2003-2005 catalogs may select the following two courses as concentration electives for Aeronautics or Astronautics: AERO X465, AERO X446. A petition is not required. Note: AERO 446 is a required major course on the 2005-2007 catalog.
  • Prerequisite Change for entering (new) transfer students wanting to enroll in AERO 301. With the consent of the instructor, entering transfer students who have completed the equivalent courses to Math 241 and ME 211 may enroll in AERO 301 without having completed AERO 121 and AERO 215. This policy applies to entering transfer students only.
  • The following substitutions may be possible. It is vital to remember that it is highly unlikely that these substitutions would be approved for academic probation students. Moreover, NO REPEAT CREDIT will be given towards the failing grade. For example, a student receiving an "F" in AERO 301 will average that "F" with the grades received in the substitute courses when determining the major, cumulative, and higher education GPA. A substitution form (available in the Advising Center) must be processed and approved prior to receiving substitution credit. It is recommended that this be completed BEFORE taking the substituted class. In the past if a student failed a core course or was unable to take a core course at the scheduled time, the price was an additional year to graduation. In an effort to minimize this penalty, especially when the inability to take a course was not the student's fault (transfer, emergency, etc), and in lieu of the sacrifices students are making in implementing the campus fee increase, the faculty has recommended that the department allow substitution courses from other departments as indicated below so that affected students will not add an additional year to graduation solely for this reason. This policy is extended to students who, on a case-by-case basis, are not able to attend or complete a core course through no fault of their own. Moreover, if an AERO student will lose a year because an AERO course is full or unavailable, the department will allow a special study (AERO 400 or AERO 500) to be used to meet that need provided qualified instruction exists. This policy should improve time to graduation for all affected students and give them more choice in the event of a personality conflict, family emergency, or other unforeseen event beyond their control.
    1. ME 302 (3) + ME 341 (3) for AERO 301 (5) + free elective credit (1)
    2. ME 344 (4) + ME 342 (3) for AERO 302 (5) + free elective credit (2)
    3. ME 313 (3) + AERO 400 (2) for AERO 303 (5)
    4. ME 422 (4) or EE 302 (3) + AERO 400 (1) for AERO 320 (4)
    5. AERO 550 (4) for AERO 420 (4)
    6. CE 351 (5) for AERO 331 (5)
    7. CE 401 (4) for AERO 431 (3)
  • Students following any catalog prior to the 2003-2005 catalog (who have not completed MATH 242 by Summer 2003) must take MATH 244 (4) instead of MATH 242 (4) beginning Fall 2003. Although Math 242 will continue to be offered at Cal Poly, it no longer has the course content required for engineering students. A petition is not required.
  • Students following the 2003-2005 catalog may use MATH 242 (4) taken prior to Fall 2003 for MATH 244 (4). A petition is not required.
  • Students following the 1992-1994 to 2001-2003 catalogs may take AERO 463 (2) and AERO 464 (3) instead of AERO 461 (2) and AERO 462 (3). Students do not need to process a petition if both sequential courses are taken. A petition is required if a student takes AERO 461 (2) and AERO 464 (3). Note: Although these courses substitute for each other, students may not use repeat credit for the purpose of increasing their grade point average (for example, AERO 463 cannot replace an F grade in AERO 461 even though AERO 463 can substitute (with approval) for AERO 461).
  • AERO 240 applies towards free elective credit only.
  • Students following the 1998-1999 to 2001-2003 catalogs may substitute STAT 312 (4) for CSC 341 (4). A petition is not required. (STAT 312 also counts as an upper-division GE course)
  • Students following the 1998-1999 to 2001-2003 catalogs may substitute AERO X300 (5) for AERO 315 (4). A petition is not required.
  • Students following the 1998-1999 to 2001-2003 catalogs may substitute AERO X331 (5) for AERO 330 (4). A petition is not required.
  • Students following the 1998-1999 to 2001-2003 catalogs may substitute AERO X431 (3) and AERO X433 (1) or AERO X 432 (4) for AERO 430 (4). A petition is not required. Students may not receive credit for AERO X431 + AERO X433 and AERO X432. Neither of these courses count towards technical elective credit.
  • Students following the 1998-1999 to 2001-2003 catalogs may substitute the two excess units from AERO X300 and AERO X331 for CSC 231/234 (2). A petition is not required.
  • This applies to graduate students only (graduate information is not typically placed on this page, but the AERO department requested to have it placed here: Blanket approval is given to approve Math 408, Math 409, or Math 418 for Aero 501 and Aero 502 ONLY for those years when the AERO Department does not offer Aero 501 or Aero 502.  Grad students should realize in doing this that they can only substitute a limited number of 400 hours for graduate math courses. Students may always petition faculty for specific course substitutions.
