Faculty Advisors
Each student is assigned a faculty advisor within his/her major. Faculty
advisors are responsible for providing technical advice. Student course
scheduling, course content questions, and career planning are usually done
by the faculty advisors. Students seeking information about graduate schools,
coop's, and future jobs should contact their faculty advisor.
Advising Center Staff
The Advising Center is responsible for providing administrative advice to all College of Engineering undergraduate students. The monitoring of academic and administrative
progress is done within the Advising
Center. Most student-related forms (such as curriculum substitution forms,
withdrawal forms, and change of major forms) are processed in the Advising
Center. The Assistant Dean has signature authority to sign for advisor, department
chair, and dean (although, some forms are routed for department review). Student course scheduling is done in the
Advising Center for new students to Cal Poly, but due
to the large number of undergraduate engineering students it is recommended
that students contact their faculty advisor for scheduling assistance.
The majority of the general education and breadth questions and interpretation
of transfer credit are done in the Advising Center after the Evaluation's
office has provided the initial evaluation.
The Advising Center maintains working folders on each student. These
folders, in conjunction with the student database, are used for general advising purposes that
include: checking progress toward the student's major, monitoring the student's
major grade point average, verifying satisfaction of the Graduation Writing
Requirement and U.S. Cultural Pluralism requirement, and pre-graduation
completion checks. The Advising Center has past and present flowcharts
and curriculum sheets for all engineering majors. The Advising Center staff
is trained to respond to most questions regarding university, college,
and department policies and procedures. Otherwise, referrals to the appropriate
offices will be made.
